Facebook has been subject to criticisms from the media and various institutions claiming that the platform has been instrumental in spreading misinformation and unethical data gathering. Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained how the company has suffered under such shadows. And so, on a mission to change the public’s perception, Facebook takes a giant leap and renames itself as Meta.
The recent leap led by Zuckerberg is an effort to overhaul and rebrand Facebook as the new frontier towards entering what the founder calls the metaverse. The move marks Zuckerberg’s goal to unify all brands under his company’s umbrella into an immersive digital universe.
Unlike Facebook, Meta will enter a new era of social networking. As Facebook was growing its brand portfolio over the years, including its ownership of Instagram and WhatsApp, Zuckerberg felt it fitting to rename the corporate identity of his Silicon Valley company into something that will represent how the different digital platforms integrate people from virtually anywhere in the world.
Meta will provide digital users worldwide with a composite online universe, referring to it as virtual and augmented worlds where people can seamlessly traverse. This is also congruent to Facebook’s goal of becoming of the most significant players in the virtual and augmented reality industry when they established Facebook Reality Labs.
In his Founder’s Letter, Zuckerberg explained what Meta aims to accomplish in the coming years. “The next platform will be even more immersive – and embodied internet where you’re in the experience, not just looking at it. We call this the metaverse, and it will touch every product we build.”
“The defining quality of the metaverse will be a feeling of presence – like you are right there with another person or in another place. Feeling truly present with another person is the ultimate dream of social technology. That is why we are focused on building this,” said Zuckerberg. “In the metaverse, you’ll be able to do almost anything you can imagine – get together with friends and family, work, learn, play, shop, create – as well as completely new experiences that don’t really fit how we think about computers or phones today.”
Furthermore, the metaverse aims to fulfill one of the greatest, highly-anticipated advancements in social technology: hologram communication. Zuckerberg and his team shared that Meta will make holograms possible for the general public, opening up more opportunities and for people globally. The ultimate goal is to transport people to different places and experiences without requiring them to sit in traffic for long hours or spend money for traveling. It’s all about augmented reality glasses and using them to stay present in the physical world.
“Our role in this journey is to accelerate the development of the fundamental technologies, social platforms, and creative tools to bring the metaverse to life and to weave these technologies through our social media apps. We believe the metaverse can enable better social experiences than anything that exists today, and we will dedicate our energy to helping achieve its potential,” shared the CEO. “We don’t build services to make money; we make money to build better services,” Zuckerberg added.
