James Marsden Gets Unexpected Praise During Jury Duty: ‘I’m a Fan’

Recently, actor James Marsden revealed that he had a memorable experience as a Los Angeles juror. He talked about his one real-life stint in the jury box in an interview with PEOPLE, which was also the inspiration for his new Amazon Freevee series, Jury Duty.

Marsden described the strange experience of entering the courtroom and seeing a wall of headshots of actors who had previously participated in jury duty. “I was thinking in my mind, ‘Well, if anybody recognizes me, then maybe I would be a distraction,'” he recalled. “I don’t know. I wasn’t really trying to get off jury duty.”

However, when a lawyer surprised him in the middle of the trial by praising his acting work, it turned out that Marsden’s concerns about being a distraction were unfounded. “The prosecuting attorney was like, ‘Can I talk to James Marsden for a second?'” he said. “And then he said, ‘I just wanted to say I’m a fan. I loved you in Enchanted.’ And I’m like, ‘Uh, thank you.'”

Marsden continued to concentrate on his job as a juror in spite of this unexpected interruption. “I’m trying to stay focused and not think about how awkward this is,” he said. “But it was funny. And then we went right back to the trial.”

The experience of Marsden as a juror is similar to that of countless other Americans who have been required to carry out their civic duty. But because of the actor’s fame, the situation took an unexpected turn.

In the middle of a trial, Marsden was praised for his acting, but he also admitted that he was a distraction for one of the lawyers.

Jury Duty

“In the middle of an opening argument, he turned to me and he goes, ‘And I’ve loved everything you’ve done,'” Marsden said, laughing. The trial was for “an eviction case or something,” he added.

Marsden admitted that he almost tried to leave after that comment, but he remembered where he was. “It was a courthouse with a wall full of headshots, so they’re gonna love that,” he said.

Despite the distraction, Marsden took his role as a juror seriously and fulfilled his civic duty. This experience inspired his new Amazon Freevee series Jury Duty, in which he plays an exaggerated version as a member of a jury.

The docu-style comedy follows Marsden and a group of fellow jurors as they navigate the ins and outs of a trial, all while dealing with their own personal issues and quirks. The show is a humorous take on the serious responsibility of serving on a jury and the often-bizarre situations that can arise during a trial.
