Maryam Pirband, Iranian Filmmaker and Director, On her Legacy and Speaking out for her People

Filmmaking is an art devoted to and centered around storytelling. For millennia, people have been telling stories; from historical accounts to academia, the art of storytelling has been the vehicle for human progress. Even the minute changes in human history are traced through the stories left behind by their witnesses. The role that storytellers play is one of openness, of letting a message speak through words, actions, and images that impact lives and society as a whole.

The role that Maryam Pirband plays is far from that of a hapless witness. On the contrary, the Iranian filmmaker, moved by her personal experiences as well as those from the women in her life, has much to say about society. “Now, people in Iran are fighting for their basic rights, and I want to be their voice,” Maryam says.

With a focus on social issues, Iranian filmmaker and director Maryam Pirband’s movies inspire discussions on societal structures, pinning them under scrutiny to serve as a moving force toward change. Director and author Maryam Pirband has the desire to make stories that create ripples.

Born in Tehran, she completed her B.A. in Economics in Iran and received her master’s degree from Azusa University after moving to Los Angeles, California. She is a PHD student. Spanning a career of nearly two decades, she broke out into the scene through her acting career after following her dreams of creating cinematic works. Maryam went on to star in more than twenty acting roles through various media: TV, movies, as well as theater production; her ability encompasses multiple fields of art. Her extensive history in scriptwriting, as well as her creative mind, led her to direct her own movies. She has a wide range of experience thanks to her long career in the sector. Her work has led her to acquire the “Best Female Director Award” at the Action on Film International Film Festival for her film “Silence,” released in 2014. Her films have garnered important honors, one notable release being her short film, “Fermysk.”

Maryam has overcome the obstacles that many women in the profession confront as an Iranian woman filmmaker. “I know the world can be close-minded, and the part of the world I come from has stringent rules for women trying to be themselves,” the director explains. Her name appears as the first of many things, such as the first Iranian stuntwoman and the country’s only female action director. The recently finished action-adventure movie “Vertical,” one of her most prominent works, has further elevated her to the spotlight and solidified her position as a force to be reckoned with in the movie industry.

Iran is a country of excellence with a wide range of talented women ready to take the world by storm, as Maryam Pirband has demonstrated to the outside world. Through her work, Maryam Pirband aims to become an inspiration to young girls and aspiring women around the world. “I want to see women and young females live their lives to the fullest, pursue their dreams and make themselves proud, “Maryam says.

Maryam Pirband’s dedication to paving a new way for filmmakers. “Whether it’s filmmaking or any other industry, nothing or nobody should stand in the way of a woman striving to make a living legally or pursue her dreams of making an impact in the world, Now young Iranian women started a wave fighting for freedom, a wave which immediately supported by men and many people worldwide ” Maryam said.
