There is no shortage of reality TV shows, and several have made their mark on the entertainment industry. However, the fact remains that not all programs are created equal, as evidenced by how few have managed to attract a loyal following. Amid the competition, RuPaul’s Drag Race succeeded in establishing an empire and creating a legacy to be remembered in the years to come. With the premiere of the sixth session of its all-star edition, it is set to continue its domination.
RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars is the spinoff of the widely popular American reality TV series that first hit the screens in 2009. Since then, the franchise has reached incredible heights, snagging nineteen Emmy Awards nominations under its belt. Hosted by RuPaul, the show documents the search for America’s next drag superstar and has birthed a roster of personalities whose individuality, charisma, grit, and talent have allowed them to stand out among a plethora of fierce contestants.
In the limelight of this spinoff edition are past queens who have to give it their all in every challenge, runway show, and lip-sync smackdown. On Thursday, the first two episodes of the highly anticipated sixth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars greeted fans and made a buzz online. Its format following that of Season 5, the revolutionary program pushes one of the contestants into battle with an “assassin” from a previous batch. Winning entails a $10,000 tip and a chance to decide on who to boot, but losing would redirect the tip back to the jar for the following week.
Thirteen queens are vying for the top spot this season, including A’Keria Davenport, Eureka!, Ginger Minj, Jan, Kylie Sonique Love, Pandora Boxx, Ra’Jah O’Hara, Scarlet Envy, Silky Nutmeg Ganache, Trinity K. Bonet, Yara Sofia, Jiggly Caliente, and Serena ChaCha. In addition, the list of guest judges is as star-studded. So far, Big Freedia, Tina Knowles, Tia Mowry, Charli XCX, Emma Roberts, Aisa Tyler, Jamal Sims, Justin Simien, and Zaldy have appeared on the hit program.
Although the return of the star-studded show livened up its loyal fanbase, there were some who questioned its timeslot. Exclusively airing on Paramount+, the sixth season graced the platform at 3:00 in the morning. While this is not considered an unheard-of move, it forces fans and longtime viewers, who do not have the opportunity to click play because of work and acads immediately, to avoid social media sites or mute keywords to dodge spoilers.
Currently, there is no clear frontrunner yet, which makes the competition all the more exciting. Apart from the solid cast, what has propelled RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars even further toward the front pages is the variety and the considerable trans representation. With more to be expected from the upcoming episodes, viewers can rest assured of quality and meme-worthy content as past queens attempt redemption in this latest installment of the iconic franchise.
