Derek (Jiajun) Ouyang’s journey in the music industry began far from the major labels and recording studios where he now works. Growing up in China, he was first and foremost a music fan. His passion for the industry led him from being a dedicated listener to a professional working with well-known artists and influential record labels. His career path reflects a deep understanding of the music industry’s creative and business sides, making him a key figure in artist development and A&R strategy.
Early Steps in Music and Songwriting Success
Derek’s first significant entry into the industry was as a songwriter. He worked closely with Chinese pop artist 张钰琪 (Rachel Zhang), who is signed to Tencent Music Entertainment, China’s largest music company. Their collaborations produced multiple EPs during Zhang’s time at Berklee College of Music, including the song Moonlight, which earned a spot on the Asian Pop Music Award Top 10 Chart. Their music resonated with audiences, accumulating over five million streams in China. Zhang’s success on The Coming One and appearances on Singer (歌手), China’s leading music competition show, further amplified their work, with the 2024 season attracting billions of views. Derek’s ability to craft songs that connect with listeners played a pivotal role in shaping her career.
Building a Career in Music Business

Derek’s transition into the business side of the industry started early. While still in high school, he worked with NetEase Cloud Music, one of China’s leading streaming platforms, curating editorial playlists that generated thousands of daily streams. This experience exposed him to the complexities of digital music consumption and audience engagement.
He later joined Atlantic Records, gaining valuable experience in A&R and marketing. In A&R, Derek identified emerging talent, analyzed industry trends, and presented weekly pitches based on data-driven insights. He also contributed to the organization of Warner Music Group’s Rock and Roll High School podcast hosted by Pete Ganbarg, President of A&R.
In marketing, Derek played a role in coordinating sales and streaming reports while also organizing fan activations and private events. His contributions extended to promotional campaigns for artists like Ed Sheeran, Alicia Creti, and Charlotte Cardin. His ability to generate digital marketing ideas and execute campaigns helped elevate the profiles of various artists under the label.

Expanding His Reach in the Industry
Derek’s work in the industry has taken him beyond the United States. As a consultant for Big Indie Records and A&R consultant at Hundred Days Records (a Virgin Music Group affiliate), he has scouted unsigned artists with significant online followings in the UK. This experience has allowed him to develop a global perspective on music trends and artist development.
He is part of Warner Records, contributing to projects for high-profile artists such as Benson Boone, Mac Miller, Rüfüs Du Sol, Nessa Barrett, Deftones, Orville Peck, and Billy Strings. His recent work on Nessa Barrett’s album Aftercare involved coordinating with writers, producers, and engineers to complete a 21-track project, including a deluxe version featuring Grammy-nominated contributors. Additionally, he has been involved in the strategy for Benson Boone’s follow-up album after the success of Beautiful Things, the most-streamed song globally in 2024.

Derek Ouyang’s career highlights his ability to bridge creative artistry with strategic business execution. From discovering new talent to collaborating with major labels and artists, he continues to make an impact behind the scenes.
