Artist Joseph Yonke on How He Discovered His Style

Art is one of the most powerful tools of self-expression. Beyond how pleasing paintings can be to the eye, they have the ability to convey emotions and personify the artist behind the creations. Each canvas is a testament to where an artist has been and where they intend to go. Such is true in the works of Joseph Yonke, a young painter seeking to leave his mark in the art world with abstract and figurative art.

Joseph is currently a full-time university student. He began painting ever since he was young under the tutelage of his grandfather and artist Robert Yonke. The rising painter shared that his grandfather is his most influential role model when it comes to art. The older Yonke taught him everything there is to know, from basic principles to profound techniques. Joseph’s style developed over the years he spent taking lessons and mentorship from his grandfather. “He helped me discover my place and identity in the art world,” he said.

One day, working with his grandfather in his garage studio, Joseph remembers how he was able to experience a pivotal moment that led him to discover his style. “I applied heavy layers of oil and acrylic paint while mixing the mediums on the canvas’s surface and following his color relation and design lessons,” Joseph recalled. “Once the piece was finished, we realized I was progressing towards a unique style of my own. The product was abstract and saturated, but the fashion of its production intrigued me more than any other work I had done prior.”

As part of Gen Z, Joseph explained that art is more than just for fun. By showcasing his work to the rest of the world, the artist aims to amplify the value of seeking passion and happiness outside of the digital space. Joseph aims to inspire young people to realize that they’re missing out on a lot if they fail to take their eyes off their phones. Painting helped him become more of himself, and he wants others to take a step in finding their passions as well.

“I have a big future ahead of me and am going to work my hardest to ensure I reach my goals,” said Joseph.

Yonke envisions himself as an established figure in the art world. He aims to continually increase his skill set, nurturing his potential. While fostering such big dreams in mind, Joseph is also currently focusing on obtaining his degree in advertising, expressing that he wants to work for an advertising firm after college and use the profession as another avenue for his art.

According to the young artist, every artist has their own inherent style. Audiences can see and feel it on canvas. “I know I can make a difference in the art world through dedication and focus,” said Joseph. “Life is short, and people should make time to do what they love doing,” he added further.
