There are certain things you don’t realise you miss until someone reminds you they exist.
For me, it was a proper Irish breakfast.
Not just breakfast.
A proper fry.
The kind that takes over the whole kitchen on a slow Saturday morning. The kettle boiling before anyone is fully awake. The smell of rashers sizzling in the pan. Sausages cooking alongside black and white pudding. Mushrooms fried in butter. Tomatoes warming gently. Beans on the hob. Eggs cooked exactly how you like them. Brennan’s bread ready for toasting and a pot of Barry’s Tea waiting for everyone to sit down.
If you grew up in Ireland, you know the scene.
It was never just about the food.
It was about the comfort around it.
It was about conversations that started before breakfast and somehow continued long after the plates were cleared. It was about family, friends, and those ordinary moments that only become precious when you find yourself living thousands of miles away.
As we say in Ireland, Ní bhíonn aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin, there’s no hearth like your own.
Since moving to New York and New Jersey, I’ve found so many things to love about life in America. The energy, the people, the opportunities, the incredible variety of food, there is always something new to discover.
But there has always been one thing I’ve struggled to recreate.
A real Irish breakfast.
I’ve searched.
I’ve asked around.
I’ve picked up ingredients whenever I spotted something familiar.
Sometimes I could get close. A decent sausage here. A packet of rashers there. Black pudding when I was lucky.
But it was always missing something.
And anyone Irish living abroad understands exactly what that “something” is.
It’s not just the ingredients.
It’s the feeling.
That is why I was so excited when I recently discovered Irish Breakfast Box.
Meet Niall and Noel – Navigating New York
The first thing that caught my attention was that it wasn’t just another food delivery company. It was created by two Irish natives, Niall Boyle and Noel Kerin, who understand the experience of being Irish away from home.
Many people in New York’s Irish community will already know Niall and Noel as the owners and bartenders behind The Blasket Pub, where they have built a reputation for genuine Irish hospitality. That same warmth seems to be at the centre of Irish Breakfast Box.
Their idea is beautifully simple: bring the authentic flavours of Ireland to Irish people across America, so nobody has to spend weekends searching multiple shops trying to recreate something that should feel effortless.
And honestly, I love that.
Because Irish people are particular about their breakfast.
We know what belongs on the plate.
We know what it should taste like.
We know when something is close, but not quite right.
What impressed me most while learning about Irish Breakfast Box was the attention they put into keeping things authentic. They work with an Irish butcher who has more than thirty years of experience, using traditional seasoning blends to create the sausages, rashers and puddings that so many of us grew up eating.
That detail matters.
Because when you’re craving home, “almost” doesn’t always satisfy.
One of the things I appreciate most is how simple the ordering process is. Rather than having to hunt down individual ingredients, Irish Breakfast Box allows you to choose a box based on exactly what you need. Whether you’re cooking for yourself, preparing breakfast for a partner, feeding the family or planning a proper weekend gathering, there are options designed around different appetites and occasions.
The Full Irish Breakfast Box is the one that immediately caught my eye, but they also offer breakfast meat selections, Ulster Fry options, breakfast roll favourites, tea-time treats and gift boxes, perfect for anyone who has ever said, “I haven’t had one of those in years.”
Now, I find myself doing something I haven’t done in a long time.
Looking forward to breakfast.
My delivery is on its way, and I already know exactly what weekend morning I’m saving it for.
The excitement is in the anticipation.
I’m imagining opening the box and seeing all the familiar favourites waiting inside.
The Barry’s Tea.
The Brennan’s bread.
The rashers.
The sausages.
The black pudding.
The white pudding.
The mushrooms.
The tomatoes.
The beans.
There is something wonderful about knowing that a little piece of home is travelling across America and heading straight to your kitchen.
I’m especially impressed by the thought that goes into getting everything there. Irish Breakfast Box prepares everything fresh before freezing it, then carefully packs each order inside custom insulated boxes with ice packs to protect the food during shipping. Fresh vegetables are layered alongside the meats, and even the eggs are carefully packed to survive the journey.
The company ships every Wednesday, making sure boxes arrive quickly and perfectly timed for the weekend fry.
Because they understand what a proper Irish breakfast represents.
It isn’t just something you eat.
It’s something you make time for.
It’s a reason to gather.
It’s a reminder of home.
What excites me most is knowing that this experience isn’t limited to Irish people who happen to live near a speciality shop or lucky enough to find the right ingredients. Irish Breakfast Box brings that tradition directly to doorsteps across America.
And for those of us who have ever felt a little homesick, that means something.
A cup of Barry’s Tea can transport you.
A familiar smell can bring back an entire memory.
One bite can remind you exactly where you came from.
Céad míle fáilte, a hundred thousand welcomes.
That is the feeling I’m hoping arrives with my delivery.
Not just breakfast.
Not just ingredients.
A little taste of Ireland.
And, hopefully, one very happy Saturday morning.
