Vertical, the independent film distributor known for spotlighting culturally relevant projects, has announced its acquisition of North American rights to Breed of Greed, a psychological thriller from director Ralph Hemecker (Once Upon a Time). The film is scheduled to make its theatrical debut Friday, September 26, 2025, while also launching on video on demand the same day. This hybrid release ensures that New Yorkers and audiences nationwide can experience the suspense in whichever way suits them, whether on the big screen or from home.
Set against the backdrop of the powerful Wendolyn pharmaceutical dynasty, Breed of Greed explores themes of family, privilege, and the supernatural. When the family patriarch passes away, his heirs return to their sprawling estate to divide the fortune. Old grudges resurface, power struggles ignite, and wayward son Henry Wendolyn, portrayed by Andrew Boszhardt, finds himself at the center of a darker revelation: their greed may not be the only threat. A sinister, otherworldly force has infiltrated the family, complicating their conflicts in ways that could escalate into something far more dangerous.
Hemecker co-wrote the screenplay with Boszhardt and Otto Eckstein, with all three also producing the feature. Boszhardt, who serves as actor, writer, and producer, shared insight into their creative approach: “We wanted to make a film that was topical but also timeless. Everyone enjoys a good downfall story, and we tried to make one that is entertaining and engaging, without being preachy. We are thrilled to have Vertical as our partner.”
The cast reflects a strong mix of seasoned talent and fresh energy. Gina Gershon (Bound, Face/Off), renowned for her fearless performances in edgy roles, heads the ensemble with commanding presence. Rising stars Chelsea Gilligan (Star-Crossed), Madison Lewis (Alexander IRL), and Adrian Enscoe (Dickinson) bring youthful intensity and dynamic chemistry to the screen. Boszhardt’s multi-hyphenate involvement hints at a personal portrayal of Henry, anchoring the supernatural narrative with emotional realism.
Vertical’s Senior Vice President of Acquisitions Tony Piantedosi praised the film’s tone and relevance: “Ralph has done an impressive job of balancing horror thrills with a dark sense of humor rooted in modern headlines of the privileged class. We look forward to presenting the film to North American audiences.”

Piantedosi handled negotiations for Vertical, while VMI represented the filmmakers. This acquisition further highlights Vertical’s commitment to championing distinctive voices and projects that resonate across genres.
Breed of Greed is positioned to stand out in the crowded fall release schedule. The film’s blend of supernatural suspense, biting humor, and commentary on privilege feels especially relevant in a city where questions of power, legacy, and influence are part of the cultural conversation. Hemecker’s past work demonstrates his ability to intertwine humanity with genre storytelling, a quality that has earned him recognition among television and film audiences.
Vertical’s upcoming slate underscores its growing influence in the independent film scene. Alongside Breed of Greed, the distributor is preparing to release Kristin Scott Thomas’s directorial debut My Mother’s Wedding (starring Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, Emily Beecham, and Freida Pinto), Ron Howard’s TIFF 2024 premiere Eden (featuring Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl, and Sydney Sweeney), and the SXSW breakout The Threesome directed by Chad Hartigan and starring Zoey Deutch. Together, these titles showcase Vertical’s commitment to stories that entertain and invite thoughtful reflection.
As September 26 approaches, Breed of Greed is shaping up to be an intriguing experience for fans of psychological thrillers, supernatural twists, and sharp social commentary. Whether you plan to catch it at a Manhattan theater or stream it from your Brooklyn apartment, this film promises to offer an experience that will leave a lasting impression long after the credits roll.
