“If you can’t figure out your purpose, figure out your passion. For your passion will lead you right into your purpose.”
Life isn’t the same for everyone. Some people know what they want in life from a very young age, while others take a long while to figure out. Every step we take leads us in one way or another to our purpose and our calling in life. The time we spend before isn’t spent waiting but rather preparing for what is to come.
This is true, at least in the case of Virginia Salem.
From Pediatrics to Body Sculpting
A 17-year-old girl had always looked up to her father. She dreamed of becoming just like him one day: a successful entrepreneur who made a difference in people’s lives. Imagine the height of her happiness when she got accepted into SDSU’s Master’s degree program in Business Management. She knew she was meant to do this.
However, life took a different turn when her younger brother fell ill with leprosy and became bedridden. It changed the trajectory of her life. Her love for her brother encouraged her to leave behind the dream of becoming an entrepreneur and pursue a medical career. As she became increasingly familiar with the discipline, especially pediatrics, she was better equipped to care for her brother.
She thought her dreams of running her own business were over, so she fully embraced medicine and enrolled in more programs related to pediatrics and OB-GYN.
Even so, life had a surprise in store for her. The path she thought was taking her away from her dreams brought her closer to them. Through medicine, she stumbled upon the world of medical cosmetics, which soon became her lifelong passion.
However, nothing comes easy in life. Virginia soon met a person who later became her husband. During her marriage, she did not receive much career support, which left her feeling alone and desolate. The 14-year-old marriage ended in divorce.
Virginia eventually combined her dream of running a business with her discovered skill in body sculpting to open a medical spa. Through this spa, she knew she was making a difference in the lives of her clients, leading them to better physical and mental health.
This is the animating story of Virginia, the founder and CEO of the VSS Body Sculpting Lab and a single mother to four beautiful children.
Small Steps, Big Changes
One would think that Virginia’s years spent pursuing medicine were wasted as they hold no significance in her current career. That is simply not true. Her background in medicine has profoundly affected Virginia’s career and continues to make an impact.
From her dealings with her clients to how she runs her business, it is all affected by her past experiences.
Medicine familiarized Virginia with patient care practices. Naturally, she is an empath, and she can now use that talent to put her patients at ease and make them comfortable. She also attempts to foster trust among her clients. She believes the care and treatment can only be fully effective if the clients trust her enough to be open about their concerns and reservations. Her medical experience only adds to her credibility as a care provider.
Because of her background, Virginia is also professionally trained to deal with patients with varying health conditions. She can foresee if a specific technique might be less effective for a client. Using her practical communication skills, she gently guides her clients towards a more suitable option, practicing transparency in client service.
Merging Two Disciplines
Her dual background and expertise inspire Virginia to think outside the box. Her aspirations include becoming a certified surgeon and opening a surgical clinic with her existing medical spa.
If Virginia succeeds in achieving these goals, she’ll be entering unexplored territory. She will not only expand the horizons of the cosmetic world but also profoundly affect the future of the medicine industry.
