Graduation is a big day for your child, but it’s also a big day for you. It’s a day you’ve been waiting for and worrying about for a long time. Not only is their graduation a reflection of their hard work, but it’s also their official entrance into adulthood. This is a sign of your hard work, too.
Celebrations are in order on graduation day. Like any significant event, dressing for the occasion is a must. Graduation ceremonies can vary greatly, but knowing what is appropriate for the day can be challenging. We’ll share a few tips so that you can look your best while enjoying your child’s college graduation.
Choosing Your Graduation Outfit
At your student’s college graduation, you’re not the star of the show. That doesn’t mean you can’t look good, though. Graduations can occur indoors or outdoors and at different times of the day. This can set the tone for how formally you want to dress.
For example, an outdoor daytime graduation will be less formal than an indoor evening graduation. Here are a few tips based on how formally you want to dress.
Casual Graduations
If the setting is more formal, you should wear a smart but relaxed look for your child’s graduation.
For fathers, chino or khaki trousers with a button-down shirt and some leather shoes match the event’s tone well. You don’t have to worry about choosing a tie since it’s a little more casual, but choose a shirt in a nice bright color that will look good in photos.
Mothers may opt for a light cotton midi dress, a cardigan, a pair of trousers, and a nice blouse. If the graduation is outdoors, opt for wedges or flats so your heels don’t get stuck in the lawn.
Formal Graduations
Evening graduations can have a more formal tone. If the graduation is being held in an indoor space like a theater, that can also elevate the tone. Graduates and parents should dress up a little more for this graduation style.
For fathers, you can dress up your khakis, chinos, and button-down shirt with a blazer or sports jacket. Depending on your preference, you could also wear a classic black or navy suit and a light-colored shirt, with or without a tie. A contrasting pocket square would also add a touch of style to the look.
For graduates, we often recommend a cocktail-inspired graduation dress with a shorter hem to avoid trip hazards during the ceremony. Mothers can also turn to cocktail attire for inspiration for their look, though you can opt for a longer hem to make the piece more versatile in your wardrobe. A more formal jumpsuit with a deep v-neck or an off-the-shoulder neckline is also a sophisticated and elevated option.
Since you won’t be trekking across the grass for an indoor graduation, you can choose a classic stiletto heel if you like. We also recommend bringing a wrap or a blazer since indoor venues can get a little chilly.
Dress to Show Support
Suppose your student has been a member of an honor society, fraternity, or sorority. In that case, they may wear specific colors at graduation that distinguish them as group members. As a gesture, you could also choose to reflect those colors in your outfit.
You can also wear school colors in your ensemble or a pin or ring with the school emblem on it.
Dress for the After Party
After graduation, you may be going directly to a graduation party or celebratory dinner. This may affect the outfit you choose. You’ll want something that will be appropriate for the after-party, whether it’s at a backyard barbecue or a five-star restaurant.
You may want to make a few adjustments, like bringing a change of shoes or adding or subtracting a blazer or sweater, to transition your outfit from the graduation ceremony to the celebrations afterward.
Celebrate Your Graduation in Style
Even though graduation is your student’s big day, that doesn’t mean it’s also not a special day for you. You’ll be taking photos the family will look at for many years, so choosing the right outfit can keep you from feeling camera-shy.
Choose something that makes you feel your best and suits the graduation setting. Most importantly, enjoy this day and celebrate your graduation!
