Stephanie Selby Photography continues its 40 Over 40 Portrait Exhibition with Volume 4, inviting another group of women over 40 throughout Charleston and the Lowcountry to step in front of the camera, share their stories, and celebrate who they are today.
Now entering its fourth volume, the portrait series has grown into an ongoing celebration of women at different ages, stages of life, and personal journeys. Each participant takes part in a personalized portrait experience with Stephanie Selby and her team, then is featured in a fine art exhibition celebrating the portraits and stories of 40 women.
For Selby, the project is about more than creating beautiful photographs. It gives women an opportunity to intentionally recognize who they have become and preserve that chapter of their lives through portraiture.
Celebrating Women At 40 and Beyond
By the time a woman reaches 40, she may have spent much of her life building a career, raising a family, growing a business, caring for others, navigating change, or moving through entirely new seasons of life.
Often, she has thousands of photographs of the people she loves but appears in very few herself. Stephanie Selby Photography created the 40 Over 40 Portrait Exhibition to change that.
The experience is not about turning back time or trying to look younger. It is an opportunity for women to celebrate themselves exactly as they are today and create portraits that reflect the confidence, personality, beauty, strength, and individuality that have developed through years of living.
Some women participate to mark a milestone. Others are beginning a new chapter, rediscovering themselves, rebuilding confidence, or simply deciding they no longer need a special occasion to step in front of the camera. That variety has become part of what makes the project meaningful.
From One Portrait Exhibition To Volume 4
What began as one collection of women has continued through multiple volumes, with each new group bringing different experiences, personalities, accomplishments, and stories to the project.
Now, Stephanie Selby Photography is beginning Volume 4.
While every participant arrives with her own reason for taking part, the project’s idea remains the same. Women deserve to exist in photographs, not only as someone’s mother, wife, daughter, colleague, or caregiver, but as themselves.
Each volume brings those individual portraits together to create a larger visual story about what life after 40 can look like. There is no single version.
Women in their 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond can be in completely different seasons of life, and the 40 Over 40 project celebrates that individuality rather than defining it.
Inside The 40 Over 40 Portrait Experience
For women who feel uncomfortable in front of a camera, being photographed can bring up plenty of questions. What should I wear? How should I pose? Will I know what to do?
At Stephanie Selby Photography, participants are guided through the process from beginning to end.
The experience starts with a consultation to learn about each woman’s story, vision, and reasons for participating. From there, Stephanie and her team help plan wardrobe, styling, concepts, locations, and the overall direction of the photoshoot.
On the day of the session, professional hair and makeup are followed by a fully guided editorial-style photoshoot. Selby directs posing and expression throughout the session, allowing participants to focus less on what they are supposed to do in front of the camera and more on enjoying the experience.
Afterward, each woman returns for a private portrait reveal to see her finished images and select the portrait that will become part of the exhibition. Participants can also preserve their photographs through handcrafted albums, framed fine art portraits, and custom wall art.
Where Portraits and Stories Become Fine Art
Each 40 Over 40 volume culminates in a gallery-style portrait exhibition celebrating the women who participated.
Rather than allowing the portraits to live only on a phone or computer screen, the exhibition brings the collection together as finished artwork. Friends, family members, and guests can experience the portraits alongside the stories and women behind them.
For participants, seeing themselves displayed as part of the exhibition can become one of the most meaningful parts of the experience.
One woman may see a portrait representing a new beginning. Another may see the confidence she spent years developing. Someone else may simply see herself differently than she did when she first walked into the studio.
Together, those individual portraits become a collection documenting women at a stage of life that deserves to be photographed, preserved, and celebrated.
Continuing The 40 Over 40 Story In Charleston
With Volume 4 now underway, Stephanie Selby Photography continues to welcome women throughout Charleston and the surrounding Lowcountry who want to be part of the next collection.
Participants do not need modeling experience or confidence in front of the camera. They simply need to be over 40 and ready to celebrate the woman they are today. Stephanie’s current project specifically welcomes women over 40 and includes professional hair and makeup, personalized planning, guided photography, a private reveal, and participation in the final exhibition.
For Selby, continuing the project into a fourth volume represents another opportunity to put women back in front of the camera and create something that lasts beyond the photoshoot itself.
